A couple years ago we discovered a great suet recipe in WildBird magazine. This suet is easy to make and all the ingredients are available at the grocery store. It will attract woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches and supply them with a good energy source during the cold winter months. It stores well and other ingredients could be added if you liked!
DUNES-CALUMET AUDUBON SOCIETY SUET MIX RECIPE
2 pounds of lard
6 cups of yellow or white cornmeal
3 cups of whole wheat flour
4 cups of oatmeal
Soften the lard and stir in the other ingredients a few cups at a time until the mixture is quite thick. I press mine into baking pans...making the batch about 1 1/2 inches thick. Refrigerate until solid, then cut into sections that will fit into your suet feeder. These individual blocks can then be frozen and hung out as needed.
